Outdoor, evening sports rescheduled
Effective immediately, all evening home and away games played by Gateway soccer teams will move to an afternoon schedule. This comes in response to recent data on EEE (Eastern equine encephalitis) in Western Massachusetts, where many towns just east of the Gateway hilltowns have been labeled “high risk” for mosquito borne illness by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, in their September 13th recommendations. Another 5 towns in Western Massachusetts have been deemed at “critical risk” by DPH.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, Eastern equine encephalitis is a serious, rare disease caused by a virus that is spread by infected mosquitoes. Anyone in an area where the virus is circulating can get infected. The risk is highest for people who live in or visit woodland habitats, and people who work outside or participate in outdoor recreational activities. Symptoms include the sudden onset of headache, high fever, chills and vomiting, and the illness can be fatal or result in brain damage. Risk can be reduced by using insect repellent containing DEET, wearing long sleeves and pants, having intact screens on windows and doors, and removing standing water from containers in the yard, such as flower pots, barrels, tire swings and wading pools.
This does not affect Gateway gymnastics (which is held indoors) or cross-country events (which start at 3:45 p.m.).
The schedule will remain in effect until further notice. Please call the Gator Line (685-1111) if you are unsure. Game times will also be updated on the MIAA online schedule, which is linked from the high school website (www.grsd.org).
Gateway students in Grades 7-12 have the opportunity to participate in the interscholastic athletic program.
