Our school is involved in the Atlantic Salmon Egg Rearing Program. This program, initiated in MA in 1997 by Trout Unlimited, enables students to study the life cycle of the salmon through a wide variety of experiential learning in the classroom and surrounding environment.
The WRWA purchased the necessary equipment (tank, chiller, filtration system ...) to successfully hatch and develop the fish. Students were responsible for monitoring the development of approximately 200 salmon eggs from the “eyed” egg to fry stage and finally releasing the species into their natural habitat ..the Westfield River. This project provided students with numerous opportunities and experiences while empowering them in gaining a greater understanding of science, technology and their natural environment. |
