Here is this week’s installment of Gateway’s weekly e-newsletter.  Back issues of Breaking News and past Superintendent’s Corners are posted in the GRSD News Archive (under “News” on the district website).  As always, your feedback and any suggestions for improvements are welcome.

UPCOMING MEETINGS: If you missed last week's meeting of the Gateway Regional School Committee, you missed a presentation by the high school Social Club, information on the National School Lunch Program, and further discussion on the budget. Since that time, a special school committee meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, June 15 at 7 determine which budget (2.0 or 3.0) to send back to the towns. The next regular meeting of the Gateway Regional School Committee will be June 22, 2011. The public is welcome to attend these meetings, which begin at 7:30 p.m. in the high school library (2nd floor). Please note that any questions or concerns should first be brought to the appropriate district staff member (i.e. a specific teacher, principal or Central Office staff member). The first agenda item of every school committee meeting is hearing issues that are not on the posted agenda. The next meeting of the Friends of Gateway will be Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. in the Superintendent's Office. New members are welcome to join this group, which supports district communications and volunteers.

 SENIOR AWARDS ANNOUNCED: Tyler Pease won the Golden Achievement Award; Anatoliy Tereshchuk was named Valedictorian, and Ben Senecal named Salutatorian at the Sr. Awards Assembly on June 8th. Click here for a complete listing of awards.

2011 GRADUATION: Sixty six members of the Class of 2011 graduated on Booster Field on Friday, June 10th. A special memorial diploma was given to the parents of Eric Champiney. Click here for photos of the event. Speeches from Dr. Brandt Kronholm (Class of '90), Class President Matt Baker, Valedictorian Anatoliy Tereshchuk, Salutatorian Ben Senecal and Superintendent David Hopson are also available. Berkshire Hills Productions will be releasing a DVD of the Sr. Awards Ceremony and Graduation this summer. Click here for an order form.

The Gateway Regional School Committee recognized staff members at a special reception on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, honoring staff achievements, nominees and finalists for the Pioneer Valley Excellence in Teaching Awards, and faculty and staff who are retiring this year.

UNDERCLASS AWARDS CEREMONY: Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors at Gateway Regional High School will have their Awards Assembly on Monday, June 20th starting at 11:45 a.m. It will be held in the Gateway Performing Arts Center.
Parents/guardians are welcome.

GRADE 8 TRANSITION/AWARDS CEREMONY: Eighth grade students attending Gateway Jr. High School will have a special Transition and Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, June 22nd at 8:30 a.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center. Parents/guardians are welcome.

JR. HIGH ORIENTATION: Area sixth grade students and their parents/guardians are invited to a Jr. High Orientation on Tuesday, June 14th from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center. Topics will include scheduling, course selection, a typical day, electives and extra-curricular opportunities. Contact Guidance Counselor Richard White (685-1207 or if you have questions.

HIGH SCHOOL FINAL EXAMS: The high school will be following a special schedule for final exams on June 15 - June 17. Block 1 and block 2 exams will be Wednesday, June 15th. Block 3 and 4 exams will be Thursday, June 16. Block 5 exams will be Friday, June 17. Make-up exams will be June 20.

CONGRATULATIONS LITTLEVILLE: Littleville students' week-long campaign to raise funds to support the American Red Cross and help area tornado victims raised $907.10.  WELL DONE!


A PARENT'S GUIDE TO SURVIVING COLLEGE: Here's something for the parents of Gateway seniors who start college this fall. This guide advises on what students should bring to college, how parents can stay in touch (without being annoying), dealing with homesickness, financial and scholarship information and much more.   • SUPER KIDS FIELD DAY: Littleville Elementary School's Field Day will be held on June 17th (rain date is June 20th). Last week's red folders contained information about the day with a Volunteer Form. Many volunteers are needed to run the "Lasso Throw", "Sponge Toss" and the always popular "Water Blasters"! Parents should complete and return the form to their child's teacher by June 10th.
  • ADULT EDUCATION CENTER CALENDAR FOR JUNE: Click here for the June Calendar of classes from the Southern Hilltowns Adult Education Center, now located at Gateway Regional High School.
  • LITTLEVILLE OFFERING SUMMER WRAP AROUND PROGRAM: Littleville Elementary School is pleased to offer a summer Wrap Around program that features a safe environment, and a fun and educational experience. Click here for a registration form.
  • MAY AND JUNE CALENDAR NOTES: Find out about Memorial Day, graduation, and the last day of school for students.
  •  SPORTS PHYSICALS: The Gateway School-Based Health Center (SBHC) is offering sports physicals for any Gateway students entering grades 7 - 12 next fall. Please call June Tanski at 667-0142 to schedule an appointment. If your child has not been seen before at the SBHC, Ms. Tanski will send paperwork home for you.
  • GATEWAY FEES MAY NOW BE PAID ON-LINE: Gateway parents/guardians and students may now pay for many student expenses--including their school lunch, athletic fee, Wrap Around program fees, or even their high school yearbook--online!
  • GATEWAY SCHOOL SAFETY HOTLINE: A reminder on one way to report harassment, bullying, drug or alcohol concerns, vandalism, and school safety issues, as a way to keep Gateway schools safe for all students.
