DISTRICT ASSESSMENT - DIBELS

DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) is used by Gateway Regional teachers of kindergarten through grade six to monitor development of the skills necessary to become a good reader.  Students with stronger than usual skills are given more challenging reading instruction while those with weaker skills are given additional help in their particular area of weakness with reading.

Resources for administering DIBELS and research-based information on teaching reading:

  • Official DIBELS Homepage from University of Oregon has free downloads of testing materials, ideas for administration, benchmark booklets, and much more about how to use DIBELS data to improve the reading skills of your students.
  • 95% GROUP is from the author of I've DIBELed Now What.  Teachers can download DIBELS monthly goals for grades k-3.  Additional downloads will be available as time goes by.
  • Reading Rockets has myriad ideas for teaching reading through written information, online videos, podcasts, and more.
  • DIBELS Community Forum enables teachers to gather and share DIBELS experiences with educators throughout the United States.
  • Florida Center for Reading Research reports some research on reading and provides extensive information about what to read if you want to develop extensive knowledge about teaching children to read.
