District-wide assessments help ensure consistency in the quality of learning across schools as well as across classrooms within each school.   They also provide data for evaluating curriculum - what's working well, what's not, and what needs to be changed.  Often, teachers embed district assessments within the menu of classroom assessments and these assessments become part of the information teachers use to tailor instruction to student learning needs.
