Dear Friends of Gateway:
Here is this week’s installment of Gateway’s weekly e-newsletter. As always, your feedback and suggestions are invited.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “Education makes a people easy to lead, but difficult to drive: easy to govern, but impossible to enslave.” - Peter Brougham
UPCOMING MEETINGS: The next regular meeting of the Gateway Regional School Committee will be on August 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Gateway MS/HS (2nd floor). The Friends of Gateway will meet at 7 p.m. on August 7th (Superintendent’s Office) to complete activities for the September fundraiser. New members are needed and should feel welcome to attend. As always, the public is invited and encouraged to attend all meetings.
2006-07 FINAL TERM HONOR ROLL: The fourth quarter Excellent and Good Effort Awards for the middle school and Honor Roll for the high school have been posted. Congratulations to our stellar students, their dedicated teachers and involved families!
NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR ANNOUNCED; FALL SPORTS INFORMATION: Principal Kathleen McSweeney has announced that Gary St. Peter has accepted the position of Athletic Director for the high school. St. Peter replaces long-time A.D. Jeff Fisk, who retired in June. Click here for details on the fall sports schedule, tryouts, and the need for a sports physical before the season begins.
FALL BUS SCHEDULE: Readers of Breaking News can get an early look at the bus schedule for the coming school year. It is now posted on the district website . It is scheduled for publication in the Country Journal later in August.
EXPANDED LEARNING TIME UPDATE: The Gateway Regional School Committee voted in June to continue the planning process for Gateway’s consideration of increasing the school day. A survey to district parents will be mailed soon; parents will be asked to return these surveys by August 17th. A final presentation will be made to the School Committee on August 22nd, before submitting a proposal to the Massachusetts Department of Education.
REMINDERS:
- FRIENDS OF GATEWAY UNITE AND WRITE CAMPAIGN: Parents and community members are urged to email the Friends of Gateway friendsofgateway@hughes.net to be registered in a data-base of people willing to Unite and Write for better funding of small and rural schools in Massachusetts. “Both schools and towns have been hamstrung by the lack of state funding,” said Friends of Gateway (FOG) President Deb Carnes. “It’s time to take a stand to keep our schools strong, our towns viable, and our tax rates affordable for everybody.”
- CHANGE IN LATE-START DAYS NEXT YEAR: Monthly late-start days will become early-release days next year, improving the amount of time that teachers can attend professional development. Students will report to school on September 6, 2007. The calendar is posted on the district website under the “administration” drop-down menu; click here for the official press release.
IN CLOSING, we have Superintendent’s Corners for the month of July. Topics for the month included district summer activities (July 1), behavioral and full-day kindergarten programs (July 16), an update on Expanded Learning Time (July 23), and key questions for the district’s future (July 30). Read each column for details.
Have a great week!
