Huntington -Erika D. Howe of Blandford and Colin D. Powers of Huntington were named to the Fall 2006 All-Academic Sports Team by the Republican Newspapers. Howe is a cross-country runner for Gateway; Powers is a soccer player. Only 24 athletes from Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin Counties are named to this highly prestigious team, which honors seniors who earn a varsity letter in their sport and hold at least an A- average during the prior marking period. Further consideration is given for additional academic honors and awards won, extra curricular activities and community service.
Howe was acknowledged for having straight A’s in her first marking period while carrying two AP classes; ranking first in her class; serving as student store manager, on student council and yearbook; and for community service projects with the Chester Historical Society and Railroad Committee, and as a “lunch buddy” to a Middle School student who has autism.
Powers was honored for holding straight A’s in his first marking period while carrying one AP course and one honors course; serving on Yearbook and as National Honor Society President; and for doing community service with Toys for Tots, the annual senior citizen holiday luncheon, and working as a Booster Booth volunteer.
A record 204 student athletes qualified for the honor this year, including Gateway’s Jonathan P. Cummings of Middlefield, Jason M. Lariviere of Huntington, and Kimberly L. Fisk of Huntington. All three played soccer for Gateway in the Fall 2006 season and were named to the list of Academic Achievers by the newspaper.
Six Gateway athletes were named to the All-Scholastic Teams for the fall season. Senior Andrea M. Ziter of Huntington was named to the Gymnastics Second Team. First Team Division III Soccer honors went to Jason M. Lariviere of Huntington and Senior David J. Root of Russell. Second Team Soccer honors were awarded to juniors Colin J. Monkiewicz of Montgomery and Milo S. Newman of Worthington. Sophomore Laura E. Garlo of Russell was named to the Division II Second Team for soccer. Erika D. Howe Colin D. Powers
