Huntington – Gateway High School social studies/history/government teacher Gary W. Boisseau (Mr. B.) has been named a semi-finalist in the Toyota International Teacher Program. If their National Selection Panel approves him, Boisseau will embark on a 2-week trip to Japan, through Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and surrounding rural areas to study the history, education, environment and industry of the country.
“I never thought I’d be a finalist,” admitted Boisseau. “It is a cultural and historical learning experience. I am extremely excited about the possibility of going to Japan.”
Boisseau was encouraged to apply through a couple of different social studies networks he belongs to. His application had to be approved by Principal Kathleen McSweeney and Superintendent David Hopson.
“What a special educational opportunity for Gateway,” added his wife, Rachel, knowing her husband’s tendency—and the school’s growing practice—of using distance learning opportunities in teaching. Gateway is already partnering with a school in Germany in its Biotechnology program, and Boisseau is using distance-learning technology with a partner school in Hawaii to discuss U.S. History.
If selected, Boisseau will travel to Los Angeles on June 21st for an orientation with 39 other teachers selected from throughout the United States. On the 22nd, they will fly to Tokyo and begin a whirlwind tour of historic and cultural sites. They return on July 7th.
Boisseau’s application had to define how he would share what he learned from this trip in the classroom, school and community. Boisseau’s proposal detailed plans for classroom instruction, a presentation to the entire school community, and a seminar to teachers throughout Western Massachusetts. If he is selected for the program, he plans to digitally record all three presentations for the Toyota International Education Program’s archives.
Finalists will be notified in early March.
