As went Massachusetts, so went Chester Elementary School

Chester- Students, assigned to work the polls and ensure that each eligible voter received one ballot, sat behind a poster that said, “Democracy: We have the right to vote for our leaders. We have the responsibility to stay informed. We have the right to express our opinions and beliefs freely. We have the responsibility to respect the opinions of others.”

Pollsters at Chester Elementary School’s mock election on November 7th.

It was all part of the mock election held on Tuesday, November 7th at Chester Elementary School. Led by Heather Cabral’s fourth grade class, a total of 94 students, teachers and staff participated.

The 4th graders researched each candidate and made campaign posters.  They shared what they had learned bout the political issues with the rest of the school at a morning assembly.

Students from Heather Cabral’s Grade 4 Classroom “get out the vote”.

Student volunteers set up the library as a polling place and assisted the younger grades through the voting process.

Their results:

Deval Patrick               54 votes

Kerry Healey               20 votes

Grace Ross                 11 votes

Christy Mihos                9 votes

In short, 56% of voters at Chester voted for Deval Patrick, who won the Massachusetts Governership by the same margin.

After the school wide votes were tallied, the class then displayed the data as tables, bar graphs, circle graphs and pictographs.
