Mohandas Gandhi wrote that “The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problems.” As we start the New Year, let me thank those who already volunteer in our schools and urge those who haven’t to do so. While the schools’ problems may not be as pressing or as large as the world’s problems, the capability, knowledge and experience held by community members in our district could be effective in helping improve educational opportunities for our children.

Volunteers in the Gateway Regional School District play a critical role in many of the daily activities throughout our schools. They assist in classrooms, staff school libraries, chaperone field trips, fundraise for special programs, serve on councils, booster clubs, boards or even the school committee—and these are only a few of the many opportunities to help children by serving as a school volunteer. You don’t have to be a parent; our volunteers include retired staff, community members, people from outside the district, businesses and even students. The key factor is that each of them is willing to donate time, knowledge or materials in order to increase student opportunities. From athletic events to playgrounds; classrooms to offices; students to staff; inside and outside; formally and informally; occasionally to daily—our volunteers make things happen in a positive manner. Hours upon hours of time and innumerable other resources are given to this district by our volunteers. Won’t you consider joining your friends and neighbors in helping our schools educate our children?

Friends of Gateway (otherwise known as FOG) is once again hosting our Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner for anyone who has volunteered in the district. This year’s dinner will be held on February 8th with open seating from 5 to 7 p.m. in the middle/high school cafeteria. Please join us as we celebrate the positive difference volunteers have made in the schools. In fact, consider becoming part of the Friends of Gateway! FOG generally meets the first Tuesday of each month in the superintendent’s office but will be meeting January 8th due to the holidays. I hope to see you at the recognition dinner, but if I don’t please accept my heartfelt thanks for your assistance in improving opportunities for our children.
