December 4 , 2006

As we look forward to a new year, the district continues to undergo change and review options. The initial meeting to explore the possibility of expanding the school day/year was held on November 27th.  Many ideas were raised during this 2-hour meeting and the participants who chose to be on the planning committees (elementary, middle, and high schools as well as a district steering committee) decided the first meeting date for all committees will be Tuesday, January 9th in the Gateway cafeteria beginning at 7 PM. A course of action will be outlined at this initial meeting and future meeting dates for each committee will be determined. Anyone wishing to be part of this planning process should plan on attending the January 9th meeting and RSVP to Wendy Long by email (wlong@grsd.org) or by phone (685.1003).

We will also experience staff changes as retirements continue across the district. We’ll soon see the last ‘original’ teachers from the opening of the middle and high schools retire. This year also marks the end of Mr. Curro’s long tenure as middle school principal when he retires this summer. I anticipate advertising for this position in January and completing the process by the beginning of April with the new principal coming on board at the beginning of August.

As I’ve done since becoming superintendent, I am asking for volunteers to participate in the process of selecting a new middle school principal. We will again be completing a multi-step process beginning with a meeting on January 16th of all interested parties to determine the qualities, skills, and attributes we’d like to see in the new principal. I ask that individuals who wish to be on the screening committee for this position contact Stacy Stewart (sstewart@grsd.org or 685.1011). The screening committee will review applications to select candidates to be interviewed (February 5th), will determine interview questions (February 20th), will interview candidates during the weeks of February 26th and March 5th, and potentially participate in site visits during the week of March 12th.

The role of the screening committee is to help me review potential candidates in a manner that allows me to make a well-informed decision regarding whom to hire. However, the screening committee will not be making the final decision of whom to hire, as that is the sole responsibility of the superintendent under the Educational Reform Act of 1993.

I anticipate that we will be successful in attracting some excellent candidates as well as finding someone who will be a good fit with the district and our middle school philosophy. I believe the screening committee process is effective and has been extremely helpful to me as it allows me to view the candidates from the different perspectives of each person serving on the committee so that I can make a more informed and considered choice in filling these critical positions. I look forward to working with the community to choose a successor to Mr. Curro.
