Prerequisite: None
Graduation Requirement for all students
(NOTE: This course will not be offered during 2004-2005.)
Introduction to Technology is designed to introduce students to the range of skills and opportunities available in the field of technology. Students will increase their awareness and develop skills in the areas of communication, construction, manufacturing, transportation, power, and biotechnology. Students will have the opportunity to explore different career paths that are open to them in many technology-related professions. The course will also be structured to provide students with an introduction to the programs in the Gateway School of Technology. (NOTE: This course will not be offered during 2004-2005.)
Metals Technology:
WELDING PROGRAM: The Welding program is a Chapter 74 vocational education program that prepares students for a career in Metal Fabrication and Welding. Students are required to take Metals Technology as a prerequisite to the more advanced welding courses. Students must complete as many hours in the Welding courses as necessary to demonstrate a number of specific competencies before they can be awarded a state certificate. Students who receive state certification will be eligible for a number of different jobs in the Welding and Metal Fabrication industry. Students enrolled in the Welding program are eligible to take a reduced course load in other subject areas in order to complete the requirements of the Welding program.
Aviation Technology:
AVIATION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM: The Aviation program is composed of two strands: Aviation Management and Aviation Maintenance. The Aviation Management strand provides students with the background and training to pursue a degree in Aviation Management at the postsecondary level. The courses taken at Gateway will prepare students to take the Ground School Examination, which is a requirement for acquiring a pilot’s license. The Aviation Maintenance strand consists of courses at Gateway which will prepare students to pursue further education at the postsecondary level to secure an Airframe and Power Plant license. This license is required for aviation mechanics. Both of these programs will also involve internship and job shadowing opportunities that will allow students to experience first hand the career opporunities available in the aviation industry.
Biotechnology:
BIOTECHNOLOGY: Biotechnology is the interaction of biology with human technology. On a practical level, it is the practice of creating and developing a variety of products through the manipulation of life forms. These products are derived from plants and other organisms. Examples of areas covered by the work of biotechnology include plant breeding, recombinant DNA, enzyme systems, gene splitting, and molecular biology.
Information Technology:
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: School of Technology programs focused on the Information Technology.
PRE-ENGINEERING: This program provides students with a rigorous curriculum in Engineering that may be used as the foundation for further study in college. Students electing to take these courses will have the opportunity to receive college credit for these courses at some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the Northeast.
COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY: This program provides students with an introduction to the use of technology in the area of communication. The interdisciplinary nature of this program combines the use of principles design and artistic creativity with the use of technology to produce various modes of communication. These include web design, computer generated graphics, desktop publishing, video editing and animation.Back to the Top
