| The
visual arts program provides a balanced art curriculum of studio courses
that encourages students to create visual statements as they observe
their world, research, develop original ideas, solve problems, develop
interdisciplinary connections and become aware of the arts of different
cultures.
Art Foundations is our introductory class. Following this foundations class students may elect a combination of term or semester courses emphasizing artistic applications in different areas. |
| ART FOUNDATIONS is the introductory course for students wishing to take additional courses in the Art department. This course provides students with the basic foundation of the elements and principles of art. Students will be introduced to a variety of two-dimensional and three dimensional media including charcoal, paint, collage, printmaking/, wire, cardboard, paper mache, plaster craft, and mixed media in the study of line, color, shape, space, value and texture. | DRAWING & PAINTING Drawing concentrates on the development
of basic drawing skills and techniques and the ability to “see”.
Students explore the use of pencil, charcoal, pastel and ink as they study
the figure, still-life, landscape and portraiture by direct observation
and personal interpretation. Observational and conceptual exercises
will explore the broad vocabulary of technique and materials involved in
the drawn image. Painting introduces students to
painting methods, color theory, drawing and composition as developed and
demonstrated by various art movements and painting masters throughout the
history of art. The principles of art will be translated into applied
techniques and students will be encouraged to individually interpret these
principles and demonstrate personal expression in their work.

| GRAPHIC ARTS TECHNOLOGY is an introduction
to the visual language of graphic design for effective, professional communication
in our visually oriented society. Students will study the historical
development of visual communication and develop design skills using traditional
media along with contemporary electronic media - the computer, scanner,
digital camera and color printer. Students will be introduced to Photoshop
and Pagemaker. This course can be taken for credit in the Art
or Technology departments.

| MULTIMEDIA PRODUCTIONS continues
the development of design skills using the electronic media. It is
designed to develop an integrated systems approach to communications and
graphic design in the areas of Desktop Publishing, WEB page design, and
Multi media Design. This is a project oriented course. Students
will be producing individual, school and community-based computer-generated
art and layout for print and WEB page projects using a variety of software.

| SCULPTURE & CLAY SCULPTURE Sculpture is an in-depth study of sculpture
and 3-D design both as utilitarian object and form of expression. For the
students who have successfully completed Art Foundations this is a continuing
exploration of form, space, and line through the construction and physical
manipulation of materials to express ideas in both abstract and representational
projects. Clay Sculptureprovides students with
an introduction to clay construction through form and function. Students
will concentrate on exploring and expressing themselves in the processes
of hand building both sculptural and functional work. The course
will include the study of historical and traditional building techniques,
contemporary design trends, glazing and decoration techniques, and use
of ceramic equipment.

| ADVANCED PLACEMENT PORTFOLIO is designed
for the serious art student who has demonstrated an outstanding ability
in the visual arts, is contemplating a career in art and is seeking admission
to college as an art major. Students will complete both assigned and independent
projects in concentrated areas of interest both inside and outside of school.
Students will be expected to submit their portfolio as part of the Advanced
Placement Examination in Studio Art given nationwide each year. Course
is open to juniors and seniors. Semester 5 Credits
Prerequisite: Permission of Art Depart. based on submission of portfolio of artwork compiled over two years of study. |

| ILLUSTRATION emphasizes the development
of techniques of illustration, learning how to search for meaning in illustrations
and encouraging students to develop their own style of expression.
Through the study of drawing, painting and other techniques, students will
learn how to translate ideas and words into visual images.

| 2D / GRAPHIC DESIGN investigates the integration
and organization of line, color, shape, space, texture and form for effective
visual statements in advertising design and various communication media.
Through the study of typography, layout design, color, visual perception
and written copy, students will explore a variety of media emphasizing
visual communication and its intended message.

| SET DESIGN is intended for students who
are interested in theater and design. Students will be introduced
to the basic concepts, conventions and technical skills related to the
design and construction of sets for theatrical productions and other events.
Students will analyze scripts for visual and psychological interpretation
to be translated into visual form. Students will construct models
and actual sets for school drama and/or musical productions. Participation
in this class includes a commitment to work after school and evenings for
drama performances.
