FLU INCIDENCE ON THE
RISE: According to the Centers for Disease Control website,
the incidence of influenza-like illness (ILI) rose slightly last week,
following 8 consecutive weeks of declining rates, and rates of deaths
due to pneumonia and influenza returned to epidemic levels. So far,
nearly all laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza are H1N1. The
Massachusetts Department of Public Health has cautioned that the flu
season is still underway, and another wave of H1N1 (Swine Flu) is
possible. Widespread influenza is currently reported in a number of
northeastern states, including Maine and New Jersey.
Corner for the past two weeks are now posted. The December
28, 2009 column reports on the official response from
the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) regarding the costs
of closing elementary schools. The January
4, 2010 column offers the Superintendent’s
