Dear Friends of Gateway:

Here is this month's installment of Gateway’s weekly e-newsletter.  Back issues of Breaking News and past Superintendent’s Corners are posted in the News Archive (under "General Information"). As always, your feedback and any suggestions for improvements are welcome.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:  "In summer, the song sings itself.” – William Carlos Williams

UPCOMING MEETINGS: The next meeting of the Gateway Regional School Committee will be on Wednesday, July 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the MS/HS Learning Resource Center. Agenda items include the prospectus for a Horace Mann Charter School at R. H. Conwell School. The public is invited and encouraged to attend all meetings.

TAVERNA, CRANE TO LEAD GATEWAY SCHOOL COMMITTEE: Alice Taverna of Russell was elected Chair and Michele Crane of Blandford elected Vice Chair, at the annual reorganization of the Gateway Regional School Committee held July 8. In other business that evening, Worthington residents gave a presentation on their prospectus for Russell H. Conwell Elementary School to become a Horace Mann Charter School.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GOOD EFFORT AWARDS FOR TERM 4: Click here for the final list of awardees for the 2008-09 school year.

TERM 4 HONOR ROLL FOR GATEWAY HIGH SCHOOL: Click here for the list of freshmen, sophomores and juniors making the honor roll in the final term of the school year.

A FEW STORIES LEFT BEHIND: A retrospective of some of the articles that I meant to write last year, but didn’t get to!

LOCAL LIBRARIES OFFERING SUMMER READING PROGRAMS: Most, if not all, of the Gateway town libraries are hosting summer reading programs for kids and teens. This is an excellent way to encourage reading over the summer months! Library hours and contact information are posted on the web (some sights include summer reading program hours) for Blandford, Chester, Huntington, Middlefield, Montgomery, Russell and Worthington libraries.

IN CLOSING,two Superintendent's Corners are now posted. On July 6th, Dr. Hopson wrote about whether or not local control for schools will continue under new proposals from Boston. On July 13, he provided an update of the prospectus for a Horace Mann Charter School at R. H. Conwell in Worthington. Read both columns for details!

Have a wonderful summer!
