Block 1 : Advanced Level English 1

9th Grade English, Advanced

This year in English, we'll read short stories, John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, Barbara Kingsolver's The Bean Trees, Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream , and Homer's Odyssey.  We'll also work on expressive and persuasive writing, including journaling, memoirs, response papers, and formal literary analysis essays.  We'll work directly on building student vocabulary, and on immproving skills in mechanics, usage, and grammar.  Performance-based projects, character journals, written reviews and formal papers will be used to evaluate student performance as well as traditional quizzes and tests.  Finally, every student will be required to engage in regular independent reading, and to respond to that reading orally and in writing.
