Block 4 : Standard Level English 1

9th Grade English, Standard Level

This year in English, we'll read short stories, John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream, and Homer's Odyssey. We'll also work on expressive and persuasive writing, including journaling, memoirs, and formal literary analysis papers. We'll work directly on building student vocabulary, and on immproving skills in mechanics, usage, and grammar. Performance-based projects, character journals, written reviews and formal papers will be used to evaluate student performance as well as traditional quizzes and tests. Finally, every student will be required to engage in regular independent reading, and to respond to that reading orally and in writing.

Our Current Unit - 3/28/05

Currently, we are making a special study of persuasive writing in general, and the literary analysis in particular.  We'll be writing a literary analysis paper of the movie, Casablanca within the next week, and then extending those skills to a literary analysis of a novel.  In preparation for this, all students know that they are to be reading a novel as their independent reading for homework, and have been working with summarizing, plot diagramming and mapping literary elements for the past two weeks.
