Review Lesson for Addition and Subtraction Number Patternsflower
Number patterns are based on a rule.  The rule tells you what to do to figure out the next number in the pattern.

Addition and Subtraction number patterns are formed by adding or subtracting between numbers to decide what number comes next in the row.

Example #1

In the following
row of numbers you can figure out the missing number by subtracting between the numbers to figure out the amount between the numbers.  This would be the rule.  You would then add that number to the 6 and get the number that is missing.
2  4  ___  8  10  12
10-8=2   4-2=2  The rule is +2, so, 4+2=6.  6 is the missing number.

You could also decide what number is added to each number in the row to figure out the missing number.
2  4  __  8  10  12
                                                                                      +2   +?         +?    +2        +2
So, 4+2=6,  the missing number is 6.  Check yourself, does 6+2=8, if it does you figured out the pattern correctly.

Example # 2
Sometimes the rule changes as you move along the row so you must check the entire row to make sure you have the correct rule.
1    2    4    5    7   ___    10    11
11-10=1     7-5=2     5-4=1     4-2=2     2-1=1
It sometimes helps if you write the rule below the row as you movealong.
1    2     4     5     7    __   10    11
                                                             +1         +2           +1         +2        +?            +?            +1
The rule is +1, +2, +1, +2, on and on.
As you work along you can see that you need to add 1 to 7 and put 8 in the space.

Example # 3
Pattern rules can get very tricky.  Look carefully and write the numbers below the row and you will be able to figure out the pattern.
5     7     10     ___     19     25
25-19=6  10-7=3   7-5=2   What numbers are missing in the middle of the rule?  2,3,_,_,6 (4,5)

5     7     10     ___     19     25
                                                                  +2           +3           (+4)                 (+5)            +6
As you work along you will figure out the rule changes by one each time so you will need to add 4 to 10 and will get 14.  You will then need to add 5 to 14 and get 19.

Now that you have read through the review it's time to try your hand at figuring out patterns and missing numbers.
Good Luck !!
