Mrs. Guertin teaches the Middle School Bands at Gateway Regional Middle School. She grew up in Southampton, MA, and went to High School at a nearby Regional School. This allowed her to be understanding of students in Gateway's far reaching communities. She attended the University of Massachusetts for her Bachelors Degree in Music. There she played saxophone in several concert band settings. She also performed in saxophone quartets, the UMASS Minuteman Marching Band, UMASS Hoop Band. During the summers she participated in the Drum Corps International Summer Music Games. She played the equivalent of tuba and marched with two different groups: The Royal Columbians of Chicopee, MA and The Cadets of Bergen County of Bergenfield, NJ. Once she graduated from UMASS, she began teaching at Hopkinton Public Schools in 1998. She also taught part time with the Boston College Marching Band that year. Wanting to move back to Western Massachusettes, she looked for a job in the area and found a position at Gateway Regional Middle School. She began teaching here in 1999. Since then she has founded several small ensembles that meet after school voluntarily. She has taken several groups to music festivals including IAJE (International Association of Jazz Educators) where the group has received a Silver Medal for the past two years; and the Great East Festival where she has received a Platinum or Gold Medal every year her group has attended. She has also been a part of the Western Massachusettes Music Educators Association. She has managed several of their festival bands. Each year she has several students that audition for and are accepted into these groups. She has also worked on and received her Masters Degree from the University of Connecticut. Mrs. Guertin always strives to teach her students how to be independent and to acheive excellence in their instrumental abilities.
