Discussion topics covered include the history of biotechnology, genes and gene expression, genetic engineering, the principles and application of biotechnology, and the management of DNA manipulation. Laboratory work, along with outside reading, computer programs, and the Internet will all be an integral part of the course and will be used to reinforce the concepts presented in the classroom. The student who takes this course is expected to be an active participant in the classroom and should be capable of some independent work. Text Recombinant DNA and Biotechnology. Kreuzer and Massey, Second Edition,2001. ASM Press. Your book must be covered at all times and contain your name. You need to bring your book to class every day. Web Page * Throughout the semester you will be using information found on my web page. Some of our classroom activities and labs will be posted there. You will also be able to access homework assignments if you are absent of forgot to jot down the homework. http://www.grsd.org/hs/teachers/jensenc/ Student Internet Account It’s important that you and your parents fill out the appropriate paperwork enabling you to have a student internet account. Having access to the school computers will be important for many of our class activities and will also allow you to have school ‘storage space’ to store documents you are working on for classwork. Notebook You will be required to keep a lab notebook and a regular three-ringed variety type. All papers received should be kept there as well as the notes taken in class. It should have a table of contents and be well organized because notebooks may be graded for content, organization, and neatness throughout the semester. A lab notebook will be provided and it must contain all lab protocols and related notes. It will be graded often. Grading Tests, quizzes and lab reports-75% Classwork-including class participation and behavior from the rubric/homework/notebooks-25% Powerschool * New this year! Your parents may be able to follow your progress in this course and others. More information will be forthcoming from the district. http://powerschool.grsd.org/public/ Tardiness If you are tardy to class, which means that you are not in class before the bell rings, your name will be checked in my grade book. Three checks and you will serve a detention with me after school. In addition to disciplinary action, being tardy may sometimes affect your grade because pop-quizzes will always be given during the first 5 minutes of class, and you will not have an opportunity to make up these quizzes. Lavatory Passes Lav passes will not be signed during the first 45 minutes of class. You should use your breaks and time in between classes for visits to the bathroom, water fountain and pencil sharpener. Remember that daily trips to the lav during class time are recorded on the rubric. Absences If you are absent, you are responsible for making up missed work within one week of your absence(s). Failure to do so will result in a zero(s)! Required Materials You are responsible for bringing all necessary materials to class. This includes your book, notebooks, paper, writing utensil, and homework assignment. Student Work Homework must be completed in pencil, blue or black ink. It must be neat and on standard sized paper (8 1/2 by 11). Any cheating will result in a zero for all parties involved. Plagiarism will also result in a zero. . Late work will be penalized and graded as follows: 25% off -1 day late, 50% off-2 days late, 75% off -3 days late. Food and Beverages This is a science lab. Food and beverages do not belong here. Science Laboratory Behavior Lab is serious business. Any horseplay will result in immediate dismissal from the classroom and a zero for the day. Do not enter any drawer, cabinet, or closet, or handle any equipment on the counter tops without the expressed permission of the teacher. Please treat the plants and animals in the room with care and respect. There will be times when equipment might be broken by accident. Report these incidents to me immediately. Classroom Dismissal and Classroom Clean-up Class is dismissed by me, not the bell, which is merely a reminder. Please clean up your work area after lab or any class activity. It’s your responsibility and a necessity if you want to get out of class on time. Classroom Rules and Discipline The following short list of rules should be followed every day: 1.Be on time for class 2.Bring all the required materials to class 3.Be quiet at the appropriate times 4.Be in the correct seat at appropriate times 5.Keep hands, feet, and belongings to oneself 6.Refrain from profane language (written, oral, physical) 7.Follow all directions given by the teacher The following discipline will be dispensed in the event that you fail to follow the rules. 1st infraction-warning 2nd infraction-permanent record of behavior in teacher notebook 3rd infraction-continued record in notebook and parent notification 4th infraction-all of the above and removal from classroom to school disciplinary personal. ****Severe infractions will result in the consequences for a 4th infraction in order to maintain classroom safety and integrity.
