Syllabus
IntroductionIn our school AP Chemistry meets for 63 minute blocks five days per week. The laboratory program utilizes two blocks and after school time for each laboratory. Students in this course have previously had one semester of advanced chemistry (college prep chemistry) so they have a good foundation of chemistry knowledge to build upon. Study GuidesStudy guides for the current chapter being studied must be brought to class daily. Students will complete their study guides and example problems in assigned study groups after the lecture. Students are expected to work with and assist group members in completing their study guides. Completed guides are an excellent review material for chapter, and semester exams. Laboratory Manual or Printed Lab MaterialsThe laboratory manual and/or printed lab materials should be brought to class the day before and days of the laboratory experiment. Lab dates will be announced in class one to two days prior to the actual laboratory. Printed materials will then be provided in order to accomplish the pre-lab exercise.
Laboratory Portfolio/ Notebook The laboratory notebook/portfolio is designed to organize students’ graded pre-labs and lab reports. It should be brought to class prior to and at the end of each lab session. This notebook is mandatory! Students are expected to complete each assigned lab per quarter and will receive an “incomplete” until the lab is made up. Lab reports turned in 1/2 days late will receive a 50% reduction in points. Lab reports turned in more than 2 days late will receive no credit.
Test CorrectionsStudents may increase their test grade up to 10 percent (maximum grade of 85 %) by doing test corrections. Test corrections must be completed by students earning a grade of “D” or “F” on an exam. Students earning a grade of “B” or “C” are encouraged to make corrections also.
HomeworkHomework is due the day following its assignment. Homework problems will be presented to the class on the white board for the class to discuss. Students presenting problems on the board will receive “board points” which will be used to calculate a class participation grade. Late homework will not be accepted. Homework assignments will be provided at the beginning of each new chapter.
Workbook Assignments Prior to Chapter TestsPrior to each chapter test a workbook assignment that correlates to each chapter section will be assigned to help students prepare for the exam.

Comments:
C1 Includes atomic theory and atomic structure as related to the structure of matter, and chemical bonding
C6 The course puts emphasis on chemical calculations often employing dimensional analysis and always use of significant figures. Chemical concepts and principles are often proven with mathematical formulas.
C2 Includes the states or phases of matter (gases, liquids, and solids; and also solutions.
C4 Descriptive chemistry including periodicity or relationships shown in the periodic table.
C3 Reactions including types of reactions, stoichiometry, equilibria, kinetics of reactions, and thermodynamics
C5 Laboratory (Actual physical handling of equipment and chemicals, carrying on of chemical reactions and processes; making observations and following procedures; reporting data, cooperative lab work, communicating results and the lab report) AP Chemistry Laboratory
All of the labs in this course require hands-on work in the lab. All safety precautions must be observed when working with chemicals including wearing gloves, goggles, and aprons. [C5]
Lab Schedule by Chapter – Labs to be done will be found in Chemical Principles in the Laboratory, Slowinski, Wolsey and Masterton, sixth edition; Laboratory Experiments for Advanced Placement Chemistry, Vonderbrink; Carolina AP Chemistry laboratories; Flynn experiments.
