Transitional Writing/Language Arts |
Language Arts Course Description Language Arts is designed to meet the needs of students who require intensive developmental reading instruction due to severe disability in the areas of reading and writing. Placement in this class will be based on testing results and /or teacher, parent and team recommendations..
Curriculum The curriculum is standards based and includes oral reading; word attack skills, fluency and speed; word analysis skills; phonemic instruction and review; comprehension; writing complete sentences and paragraphs; editing strategies; and developmental spelling.
Materials needed A variety of reading materials will be used in this course. An emphasis will be made on the learning of functional vocabulary needed for both career and independent living skills. Student magazines with timely and age appropriate subject matter will also be used in this course.
Transitional Writing Course Description This course is designed for students who need to further develop the skills involved in career related reading and writing. The students in this class will work to develop career related vocabulary, to practice the writing of their personal information, to read and fill out forms related to the world of work and other daily activities necessary for independent living.
Curriculum The Mass Standards in ELA will be addressed. Students in this class will be compiling a portfolio for the MCAS-Alt test. In addition students will develop vocabulary, practice writing sentences and paragraphs, improve spelling and grammar usage related to career and vocational writing tasks.
Materials needed
A variety of programs, texts, teacher made resources and on-line resources will be used in this course. Life Skill Curriculum materials and real life forms and other resources will be utilized. Newspapers, advertisement flyers and community resources will be utilized.
Class Expectations Attendance is very important and is part of the grading system. Poor attendance will lower your grade. Participate daily in a positive way. Be prepared with books, writing utensils and assignments. Keep an assignment notebook daily.
