Lines and Their Slopes

This page shows how the rise and run contribute to the overall slope of a line. Remember that the rise is vertical change and the run is horizontal change. The activity below allows you to click and drag point A, changing its location in the coordinate plane. As you do so, you also move it closer to or farther from point S. These distances are the rise and run themselves!! See how the "slope triangle" also changes shape. Its longest side, called the hypotenuse, is a part of the line that you're working with. (For best results, stay above and to the right of the green lines.) The first graph deals with positive slope; the second with negative slope.
