The YMCA of Greater Westfield is offering a "Y's Kids" program after school for students attending Gateway Regional Middle School this fall, as long as enough parents sign up by June 29.

School Committee Celebrates Gateway Staff Members Honorees recognized at annual Staff Reception
SWAMPED! Littleville Musical and Art Show Logo for Swamped!

Littleville Elementary School first and second graders will present SWAMPED!  - a musical about friendship, tolerance and change – in the Gateway Performing Arts Center on Thursday, May 17. Curtain rises at 6:30 p.m. for this free musical performance and everyone is invited.

A student art show precedes the concert and opens at 6 p.m.

Swamped!  tells the story of preparations for an upcoming party that go amiss as different creatures encounter challenges: the turtles are late, the bullfrog is bullying, tadpoles are growing limbs (gasp!) and the dragonfly larvae are afraid to spread their wings and fly.

The musical is directed by music teacher Renee Mosher; the art show by Amy Thornton.

This event was supported by the Gateway Education Foundation.

Spring Break Spring flower

All schools will be closed April 16 - 20 for spring break. Offices will be closed on Monday, April 16 for Patriot's Day.

Wrap Around will be open all week from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. as long as enough children are pre-registered. Please send children with a lunch and two snacks, dressed to go outdoors. Registration forms will be coming home in red folders. Families who pre-register, but do not attend, will still be charged.

The new budget reflects nearly $106,000 in reductions to address a $95,000 shortfall in Version 1, but reduces the total of town assessments to just below 2.5%. Parent-Teacher Conferences

Students will not attend school on Monday, March 7 due to Parent-Teacher Conferences. Parents must make an appointment for a conference, which is an important opportunity for parents to meet with their child's teachers, find out how their child is doing in different subject areas, and talk about any concerns that are seen at home or school. 

March 8 Early Release

Students in the Gateway Regional School District will have a 2-hour early release on Tuesday, March 8. Lunch is served; no afternoon preschool. Wrap Around is open early; Wellness Center on regular schedule.

Education Foundation Funds 7 New Projects

The Gateway Education Foundation funded 7 new classroom projects totaling just over $3000 at its Board of Directors meeting on September 21. Since starting its Funds for Learning program in September 2012, the Foundation has funded 34 projects totaling over $22,500.

“We are pleased to have come this far,” noted the Foundation’s president, Shirley Winer. “But the teachers whose applications were not selected for funding would tell you that there’s more to do.”

Please remember to send in a note with your child in the morning if there is going to be a change in transportation. Make sure to include child's full name, teacher and date. If you can send in a note in the morning it helps to alleviate the confusion at dismissal time.

The Third Annual Vocabulary Parade was held at LIttleville on June 3. The idea comes from the children's book, "Miss Alaineus: A Vocabulary Disaster" by Debra Frasier.

Spring pictures will be taken on March 1. All students will be photographed and then a proof sheet will be sent home at a later date. If you are interested in purchasing any of the photos, the proof sheet will come with an order form. More information will be coming home in Friday's Red Folder.

Students at Littleville will be joining in the Jump Rope for Heart event during their PE/Health classes. Fundraising forms and infromation sheet will go home on Friday, January 22. Please have all money raised in NO LATER than Wednesday, February 10, 2016. Last year we were able to raise $1525, let's see if we can beat that this year. 

Littleville 'Goes to the Dogs' on January 20

First and second graders at Littleville Elementary School will present an art show at 6 p.m. that night, followed by their musical "Arf!" at 6:30 p.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center. Spirit Days and Special Activities Highlight Week Leading into Holiday Break

The week preceding the holiday break was full of special events including door decorating, spirit days, 'Reindeer Games', concerts, breakfast prepared by staff, a visit from an international pen pal, and a cultural fair!

Holiday Break information

All schools and offices in the Gateway Regional School District will be closed from December 26, 2016 through January 2, 2017 for the annual holiday break.

The Gateway Wellness Center will be closed on Saturday, December 24; Monday, December 26; Saturday, December 31; and Monday, January 2. Weekday operations will be 5:30 – 7 a.m. and 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. (Tuesday – Friday). The Center will resume regular winter hours on Tuesday, January 3 when schools reopen.

The Littleville Wrap Around Program will be closed on December 26 and January 2nd. It will be open all of the other weekdays (December 27 – 30), as long as enough families pre-register. Families are reminded to pack a lunch and two snacks for each child attending.

Half Sleepover

On Tuesday, April 5, 2016, Littleville will be hosting a literaey night called "The Half Sleepover" from 6-7:15. Families are invited to wear pajamas and bring along a favorite stuffed animal and /or blanket. There will be different activities set up for families to enjoy such as "Campfire Read Long", "Wishing Upon a Star" and guest readers. Each activity will last approximately 10 minutes. There will be a snack and dorr prize. Every student that attends, will recieve a a book to take home with them.

You must RSVP by April 1 to attend this event. Please look in your child's red folder for RSVP form.

Chester, Littleville Open Houses Coming Up

Littleville's Open House will be Tuesday, September 27; Chester's is the following evening. Both run from 6 - 7 p.m.

Back to School News

Teachers return on Friday, August 26. Students return on Tuesday, August 30. Elementary Schools will now be PreK - 5; grades 6-8 will be the new Middle School (and run on the high school schedule); 9-12 remains the high school. Sports tryouts begin August 25 and will be posted on the high school website (students in grades 6-12 are eligible). The Back-to-School issue of Breaking News will be posted the week of August 22nd and will include time schedules, bus routes, lunch menu and more! Please check back at the end of August!

Budget Yields Changes for Coming School Year

The approval of the Gateway FY'17 budget in four towns means that cost savings changes for the coming year will move forward, including 5th graders staying at their elementary schools, grades 6-8 reforming into a middle school, not replacing some retiring staff members, and the buildings closing next year at 9 p.m.

School Safety Explained

The Gateway Regional School District wants parents to know that the district has protocols in place to deal with a range of emergencies. Based upon public reaction on social media during a lockdown earlier this spring, Safety Coordinator Joyce Hanousek wants to explain some of the terms to parents and community members.

'Talk and Play' Workshop for Parents

On Tuesday, April 5, the Gateway preschool teachers and speech therapists will present a workshop called “Ways to Talk and Play with Your Child” from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at Littleville Elementary School. Susan Rhoads, Lynn Thomson, Renee Boylan, Jamie Flematti, and Lynn Archambault will speak with parents about things parents can do with young children to promote language development and vocabulary (which can help children learn to read), how to incorporate family play time into busy days, and ideas and examples of play that promotes language development in young children. Plus parents will do a “make and take bag” and receive informational handouts.

TODAY'S SHELTER-IN-PLACE AT GATEWAY REGIONALStudents and staff at Gateway Regional Middle School, Jr. High and Sr. High had an hour-long shelter in place earlier today after a student reported seeing what might have been a gun in another student’s locker. A search revealed an honest mistake but it is always worth noting: “if you see something, say something.”

Flag holds place of honor at Littleville Flag holds place of honor at Littleville

Last spring, custodian Joanne Frappier mentioned to her sister (Rosalie Barber of Russell) that the flag at Littleville Elementary was showing some wear due to weather and age. She couldn't have imagined what would happen next, thanks to her nephew--Donnie Barber, GRHS Class of '79--who had been on active duty at Camp Morehead in Afghanistan and was now serving as a civilian contractor there.

Boston Celtics support Gateway Education Foundation

The Boston Celtics have selected the Gateway Education Foundation to benefit from their charitable organization this year. Tickets are now on sale for a game in Boston on January 29. Order forms and payment ($30 per seat, payable to the Boston Celtics) must be in by December 22.
