Dear Friends of Gateway:

Here is your bi-weekly issue of Breaking News—the e-newsletter of the Gateway Regional School District—for the 2019-20 school year. We are always looking for feedback and ideas to improve the newsletter, so please feel free to contact us!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “The sun, with all those planets revolving around it and dependent on it, can still ripen a bunch of grapes as if it had nothing else in the universe to do.”
—Galileo Galilei

SCHOOL COMMITTEE: The Gateway Regional School Committee will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 23 in MS Rooms 112/114. The public is welcome to attend and have their comments heard and questions answered.

homecomingHOMECOMING REMINDER: This weekend! 4th Annual Homecoming Weekend will be held at Gateway Friday, Oct 18 - Sunday, Oct 20. Events include a Family Movie Night & welcome dinner Friday 10/18, 5K Dam Road Race and a Littleville Lake paddle plus the Annual Alumni Soccer Game on Saturday 10/19, with an Alumni Band Concert on Sunday, 10/20. Events are open to Gateway staff, students, retirees, families, alumni, and community members—everyone is welcome! Feel free to share our info flyer with anyone else in the community who may be interested.

GATEWAY OPTOMETRY OFFICE OPENS: On Friday, October 4, the Optometry Office of the Gateway School-Based Health Center began seeing several of over 100 students who have already enrolled for the program. Opening day was a pilot, or sorts, to test out everything from the new equipment and supplies to the length of time it would take to get students to the office, examined and returning to class.

PRE-SCHOOLERS STUDY "PETE THE CAT": Students in Miss Sue’s half-day preschool classes at Littleville Elementary School have just finished studying the Pete the Cat series by Eric Litwin and James Dean, and celebrated with a cupcake party in honor of the books

SEND US YOUR PHOTOS!: Students, staff, parents and community members now have a place to send their favorite Gateway photos, for distribution to the public. Please email photos that you capture at sporting events, field trips, plays, concerts, classrooms and school events to photos@grsd.org

PENNY SOCIAL NOVEMBER 15: The Gateway Regional High School choirs are again holding their annual Penny Social on Friday, November 15 with item viewing beginning at 5 p.m., and auction beginning at 6 p.m. This event will be held in the Gateway cafeteria, with plenty of parking out in front of the school.

GATEWAY GAMERS NIGHT: The Gateway High School Enterprise Club is hosting another Gateway Gamers Night Wednesday, October 23, from 4pm to 8pm. Students will be playing video games on the big screen in the auditorium. The event is free to attend, $5 to play. Middle & elementary school students are welcome with a parent or guardian staying for the event.

SUPPORT GEF WHILE SHOPPING: Did you know that you can raise funds for the Gateway Education Foundation when you shop online? You can, if you process your Amazon order through “Amazon Smile”. It’s simple and Amazon will donate a percentage of your sales to the Foundation.

GATEWAY SENIOR NIGHTS COMING UP: Beginning mid-October, the fall sports teams are competing in their last home contests where the senior athletes will be recognized by their coaches, teammates, families, and the Gateway Athletic Booster Club.

MCAS RETAKE:  An essay prompt on the 10th grade English Language Arts MCAS exam was found to be biased and impacting scores on that test for some students. Because this could impact students eligibility for the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship, the state is allowing current juniors to retake that ELA exam in November.

HALF-DAY ON OCTOBER 22: All students in the Gateway Regional School District will have a half-day on Tuesday, October 22, for staff professional development.
