Gateway follows the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education protocols called Massachusetts Tiered Support Services. This three-tiered model of instruction, intervention, and support is similar to Response to Intervention (RtI) and is designed to meet the academic and non-academic needs of all students in a safe environment. Tier I consists of excellent academic instruction and behavioral support for all students, including but not limited to, differentiated instruction, good teacher practices and instructional tools. Tiers II and III use additional instruction and intervention as determined through the use of screening or diagnostic assessments. These assessments enable teachers and staff to use student information as a way to understand individual student learning needs and behaviors. Students are then given short-term, targeted interventions/supports through small group or one-on-one instruction - the goal being successful remediation of the learning gap or behavior. Students flow through the tiers while being monitored on a regular basis.
