Dear Friends of Gateway:

Here is your latest issue of Breaking News for the 2020-2021 school year!

Quote of the week: “Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.“ ~ Marian Wright Edelman

WINTER BREAK: A reminder that beginning Monday, February 15 through Friday, February 19, the district will have winter break. Information on whether school will be hybrid or remote will be provided next week.

GATEWAY EDUCATION FOUNDATION UPDATE: The Gateway Education Foundation offers opportunities for grant funding through its Funds for Learning program. The aim of this program is to provide meaningful educational opportunities for students in the Gateway district. The GEF board recently approved two new grant-funded projects. The first will allow Gateway students to participate in a virtual workshop featuring the cast and music director of the Broadway show Hamilton. For the second project, the GEF will purchase a subscription to Scholastic for approximately 55 second-grade students. Students will learn about various topics in science and social studies by reading Scholastic News. Each student will then be able to choose a book to take home with them at the end of the year.

SECOND QUARTER HIGH SCHOOL HONOR ROLL: Congratulations to the students who were named to the honor roll for the second quarter. In accordance with the student handbook, honor roll status is granted to students with high academic achievement for a marking quarter. First honors are awarded to students who receive A’s in all courses taken. Second honors are awarded to students who receive a minimum of two A’s and receive B’s in all other courses taken. Third honors are granted to students who receive a minimum of one A, with B’s and no more than one C in all courses taken. Click here for the full list of honorees.

MS/HS Q2 GRADE REPORTS:  Second quarter (and HS semester 1) grades are now final.  All parents/guardians who have provided us with an email contact, can login to the Power School Parent Portal to view these grades and additional information.  If you are not yet set up with portal access, or have any other questions about the Parent Portal, please call Tammy Paiva at 413-685-1023.  Please contact individual teachers with any questions about grades, or call the MS/HS Office at 413-685-1102 with any further questions.

LITTLEVILLE READ BOWL STATE CHAMPIONS: Mrs. Bak’s Third Grade students at Littleville Elementary have participated in Share the Magic Foundation’s READBowl, a global reading competition for Pre-K through 8th grade students, designed to inspire students to read and provide teachers with a platform to motivate students to increase reading minutes.  Click here for the full release. They also were named the READBowl State Champions and will receive 10 free books. Congratulations!

FORMER COACH ESTELLE RECOGNIZED BY MIAA: Former Gateway high school girls soccer coach Stephen Estelle was recognized by the MIAA for recently being named the NFHS National and Sectional Coach of the Year. To read the full release from the organization, click here.

VIRTUAL COLLEGE FAIRS: For those looking at their future beyond high school, here is a video for College Board with virtual college fairs to get information about multiple colleges from college admissions officers and current college students plus connect with college planning experts to help you take action on key steps to college.

HILLTOWN FOOD BUCKS: There are still 80 spots open for the Hilltown Food Bucks program which provides grocery assistance for those that may need it during these tough times. For more information check out the flyer and application here.

GATOR STORE FLASH SALE/PROMOTION: We have another flash sale from February 13-14. Use code FEBFLASH. Throughout the month of February, you can get 20 percent off all your Gator apparel purchases. All you need is to enter the code “Feb21” at checkout. Start shopping here

KINDERGARTEN SCREENING: If you or someone you know has a child turning age 5 before September 1, 2021 please contact our elementary schools for more information and to sign-up. Blandford, Middlefield and Chester residents contact Chester Elementary at 685-1360. Residents of Huntington, Russell, and Montgomery contact Littleville Elementary at 685-1300.

EBT BENEFITS: P-EBT benefits will be extended through the rest of this school year. If your student qualifies for Free or Reduced meals under the National School Lunch Program, then they would qualify to receive this extra financial help each month in the form of a P-EBT card. If you have not received this card, it may mean that your family does not qualify. This year the USDA extended free meals to all, but this may not necessarily qualify a family for this extra financial help. If you have not been receiving this P-EBT card and you feel your family would qualify, please contact Tasha Hartley at or call (413) 685-1005. You may also send in a Free/Reduced meal application if you feel you would qualify through income. Families who qualify through income will be sent a notification letter by email or USPS as soon as possible.

LITTLEVILLE & CHESTER PARENTS: A friendly reminder that parents of students in grades 3-6 can view your child’s grades anytime using the Parent Portal. The Parent Portal provides families with easy access to student grades and information that is updated weekly by teachers. If you have not set-up your log-in information please contact Tammy Paiva at

VOCATIONAL APPLICATIONS: Parents and guardians of students living in the Gateway Regional School District are advised that applications are now available for students interested in applying to Smith Vocational or Westfield Technical Academy for the 2021-22 school year. Families should contact Mr. Romani at for further information regarding the application process. Please be aware that all application materials must be received by Gateway Regional School District no later than March 1st, 2021.

Inclement weather - In the case of inclement weather falling on a Tuesday or Friday and school is changed to a Remote Learning day, Curbside Meals to Go will not be available. Food Services would like to ensure that, not only staff, but our Gateway families stay safe.

INCLEMENT WEATHER (SNOW DAY) FAQ’S: If an ‘in-person’ school day needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather, the district will be moving to a “Remote Snow Day” where staff will teach all students remotely (a replacement to our Blizzard Bags).

CURRENT SCHOOL CALENDAR: Key dates for phased return to hybrid in-person can be found on page 19 of the Full Reopening Plan here.
