Dear Friends of Gateway:

I hope that everyone has a great week and a restful break.

I asked our Gateway students for things that they were thankful for related to Gateway--here are some of the responses:

-The teachers that put in extra work to help me

-What I'm thankful for at Gateway is that it helped me make very great friends and friends that I can count on if I ever need them. Friends that I know I will still have after I graduate.

-I am thankful for the teachers that put their students first and care about them personally.

-I am grateful that I have never once gotten bullied while here.

-The community as a whole has been the best to grow up around.

The responses have been overwhelming and are evidence of the amazing community we have here!
Have a wonderful week!

COUNSELOR LETTER: The Gateway School Counselors are excited to share another newsletter with you! In this edition, there are reminders about application deadlines and financial aid. See the whole thing here.

COVID TESTING LAST WEEK AND THIS WEEK: We are pleased to announce that the school district’s COVID weekly testing began last week resulting in negative tests for all who participated!  If you would like to sign the consent for your child to participate in pooled testing, please complete the form online here. We will not be conducting weekly testing during this short week, and will resume the week of November 29.

Routine COVID weekly testing minimizes disruption to learning by helping us catch potential spread of the virus before it starts. Samples are collected at school and the individual swabs themselves. Five to ten samples are grouped together. Once the samples get to the lab, all the samples in the group are tested for COVID-19. In almost all cases, it will take less than 24 hours to receive safety check results. Students can continue to come to school while awaiting safety check results; they do not need to quarantine while awaiting results. If a safety check test is positive, the district will follow up with students and families accordingly.

VACCINE INFORMATION: The Hilltown Community Health Center (HCHC) will be offering vaccination clinics for students.  Please see their attached letter for more information.  Free Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine For Students Ages 5-11

Additionally, Gateway Regional will be collecting vaccine information from all students and staff starting in the month of December. To be clear, vaccines are not mandated for students and staff by the DPH or district, but the school district will be collecting information regarding who has vaccines to report that information in a collective way. Individual names will not be shared and will only be accessible to administration and nursing staff.

LOCAL AND STATEWIDE COVID DATA: The MA Department of Public Health puts out COVID data for our local towns and counties on their statewide data dashboard.  COVID reports will also include school district information regarding positive cases and close contacts.

Here are the data sheets.

GATOR GREATS: Throughout this year, we will feature staff from around the district as part of the Gator Great series. Up next is Emily MacDonald, the Gateway Life Skills Program Teacher.

This is my ninth year teaching at Gateway.

Growing up in Chester, everyone in my family attended Gateway schools.  I was a student teacher in the High School in 2001 and even though I moved to Connecticut I always hoped to return to Gateway as the Life Skills teacher.

One of my favorite memories as a teacher was coordinating the first ever Room 111 and Best Buddies 5k in Spring 2021.  It was the first event that brought much of the school together during the pandemic.  There were so many smiles and people challenging themselves to achieve something they never even considered before.

Above all, I will never forget each time one of my students crossed the stage during graduation.  I spend my days witnessing the highs and lows, the personal victories, and immense strength of these young adults.  They are the reason I am here, and hope to be for many more years.

Don't let anything get in the way of your goals.  Find a mentor or someone who can help guide you.  If none are available to you, it will not be easy but you can achieve anything with the right mindset and drive.   Nothing happens overnight and you will feel so empowered when you realize that you can choose your own outcomes.

NOVEMBER GATOR STORE PROMO: This month we are offering 15% off on your Sideline Store purchase of $85 or more! The promotion is good for the entire month of November. This will end on 11/30/21 at 11:59 P.M. EST. Click here to see what’s in the Gator Store.

HILLTOWN HOLIDAY HELP 2021: The Gateway National Honor Society is continuing a tradition of collecting donations to help struggling families in our community make the holidays special for their children.  This year we are asking for monetary donations through a Go Fund Me page, which will ultimately be used by Hilltown Community Health Center to purchase gifts online and fulfill wish lists for families in need of some extra assistance during the holiday season. GATEWAY TIERED FOCUS MONITORING: During the week of 11/29/21 the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Public School Monitoring (PSM) will conduct a Tiered Focused Monitoring Review of Gateway Regional School District. The Office of Public School Monitoring visits each district and charter school every three years to monitor compliance with federal and state special education and civil rights regulations. Areas of review related to special education include student assessments, determination of eligibility, the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team process, and IEP development and implementation. Areas of review related to civil rights include bullying, student discipline, physical restraint, and equal access to school programs for all students. For the full release, click here.
