Dear Friends of Gateway:
It seems like COVID continues to challenge us in new ways as soon as we feel like we may be able to get our legs under us. This week, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education announced a new protocol to begin the week of January 31st with a stronger focus on testing while moving away from contact tracing. I will provide you with more information as we process how this will work at Gateway.
In the meantime, we are so appreciative of our partnership with the Hilltown Community Health Center, who provided us with free at-home test kits to give to staff and students this week.
Please keep the communication open between your family and the district. We are happy to continue to work together to maintain our only option of in person learning.
If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to your child’s school principal or Superintendent Smidy.

THERAPY DOG VISITS ON WEDNESDAY: Gateway Regional is considering working with a therapy dog to support students as an additional, optional intervention in the near future. Please let Superintendent Smidy know if you have thoughts or concerns about this possibility. Northampton Public School’s therapy dog Douglas and his owner, Officer Josh Wallace will be visiting Gateway on Wednesday, January 26 to talk to administration about this opportunity. Students and staff may see Douglas around the building. He is very friendly, and he is also trained to not approach individuals who do not want to have an interaction with him.
LOCAL AND STATEWIDE COVID DATA: The MA Department of Public Health puts out COVID data for our local towns and counties on their statewide data dashboard. COVID reports will also include school district information regarding positive cases and close contacts.
Gateway COVID Report for 1/21
Gateway COVID Report for 1/14
Gateway COVID Report for 1/7
LITTLEVILLE PRESCHOOL TIME CHANGE: Effective 1/24/22 all preschool programs located at Littleville and the MS/HS complex will be ending their day at 3 pm. The half-day, afternoon program, will operate from 12:30-3:00pm. This change is to alleviate traffic during the K-6 dismissal from both buildings.
COVID AND STATE MANDATES: DESE Commissioner Riley announced that the mask mandate will continue through February 28, 2022. At that time, he will reassess COVID data to determine if it will continue.
There have been questions about the school going remote if COVID numbers continue to rise or if it is determined that we cannot adequately support students due to staffing absences. The state is not permitting remote learning for any public schools at this time. If we determine that we cannot operate safely, we are directed to close and make up the day(s) missed in June. Blizzard bags are also not an option this school year, per the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
TIERED FOCUS MONITORING RELEASE: During the week of February 4th the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s (DESE’s) Office of Language Acquisition will conduct a Tiered Focused Monitoring Review of Gateway Regional School District. The Office of Language Acquisition reviews each district’s and charter school’s ELE program every six years to monitor compliance with federal and state English learner education laws and regulations. Areas of review will include English learners’ student assessments, identification of English learners; what programs English learners are placed in, parent and community involvement, curriculum and instruction, student support services, licensure requirements for faculty, staff and administration, program plans, and evaluation and recordkeeping. See the complete release here.
VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS VIDEO: Gateway has two amazing vocational programs and we want to get the word out about them! Check out the video here.
