Mrs. Bak’s Third Grade students at Littleville Elementary have participated in Share the Magic Foundation’s READBowl, a global reading competition for Pre-K through 8th grade students, designed to inspire students to read and provide teachers with a platform to motivate students to increase reading minutes.
Founded by Super Bowl Champion and children’s book author Malcolm Mitchell, Share the Magic Foundation provides in school and free virtual programming to students across the country.
"Mrs. Bak’s Bookworms" (chosen Readbowl team name) joined students from across the country and around the world to compete in READBowl, the World Championship of Reading, that began on Monday January 11, 2021, the day of the NCAA College Football National Championship. The students competed for four quarters (weeks) of reading that ended February 7, 2021. Mitchell announced the World Champions on Super Bowl Sunday, February 7, 2021.
The class read over 15,000 minutes during the four week challenge. Over 70,000 students participated in the reading challenge with classrooms from all fifty states. A total of 60 million minutes of reading were recorded during the challenge. Mrs. Bak’s class came in eighth place two weeks in a row, and first place in the final week. Although they did not win the Big Three Conference, students were quite proud of their victory.
