About Us
Gateway Regional School District is a school district serving students from six Western Massachusetts towns: Huntington, Russell, Blandford, Chester, Montgomery, and Middlefield.
The district consists of two elementary schools and a grades 6-12 secondary school, providing educational services to approximately 750 students in grades PreK–12. It was founded in 1957. Chester Elementary is located in Chester, MA; Littleville Elementary is sited in Huntington, MA. Gateway Regional School (grades 6-12) is situated on the same campus as Littleville Elementary in Huntington, MA.
It is said that before the abolition of slavery, a branch of the Underground Railroad, which was developed to assist fugitive enslaved people in their escape to Canada, ran through Huntington (then Murrayfield). Gateway Regional School students investigated this history in 2024-2025 and determined that, while there may not be adequate historical evidence to confirm the existence of the Underground Railroad station in the area, those who named Gateway Regional School District did select the district name to honor this likely history. Now, a plaque at the entrance of Gateway Regional School reads:
"Littleville Elementary and Gateway Regional School are located along the Westfield River route of the Underground Railroad, believed to have
served as a station offering aid and shelter to those escaping slavery on their journey north.
The Gateway Regional School District was named to honor this place and its role as a "gateway to freedom," continuing its legacy to be a
"gateway" to greater knowledge, better education, and a brighter future for all."
Gateway Regional School District offers a personalized learning experience to all students within our tight-knit community. While students are spread throughout our 175+ square miles and 6 towns, they are united as Gateway Gators from PreK through Grade 12. They benefit from rigorous academic instruction, intentional social-emotional development, and opportunities to learn beyond the classroom. We offer 2 Chapter 74 Vocational Programs in Early Education and Care and Metal Fabrication and Joining Technologies (Welding).
We hope you will consider Gateway as an open doorway to your child's successful future.
