Dear Friends of Gateway:

Here is your bi-weekly issue of Breaking News—the e-newsletter of the Gateway Regional School District—for the 2019-20 school year. We are always looking for feedback and ideas to improve the newsletter, so please feel free to contact us!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion.”
—Henry David Thoreau

SCHOOL COMMITTEE: The Gateway Regional School Committee will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9 in MS Rooms 112/114. The public is welcome to attend and have their comments heard and questions answered.

hatsHOMECOMING SCHEDULE: The 4th Annual Homecoming Weekend will be held at Gateway Friday, Oct 18 - Sunday, Oct 20. Events include a 5K Dam Road Race and the Annual Alumni Soccer Game on Saturday 10/19, with an Alumni Band Concert on Sunday, 10/20. Events are open to Gateway staff, students, retirees, families, alumni, and community members—everyone is welcome! Feel free to share our info flyer with anyone else in the community who may be interested.

GATEWAY HS RECEIVES FULL ACCREDITATION: The New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) has awarded GRHS full accreditation after its decennial (every ten years) evaluation and campus visit. The NEASC team observed classrooms, shadowed students, and met with staff, parents, and school committee members.

LITTLEVILLE LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Library volunteers are needed this year to help at Littleville and Chester Elementary Schools. Littleville is looking for parent or community volunteers to come in one (or two) times a week, for a morning or an afternoon shift, to work with our students and teachers during their library visits. This work can include things like reading to students, helping students find books, checking books out to students, and book repairs. Chester Elementary School’s Library schedule is still being determined, but Fridays are expected to still be on the schedule.

FAMILY SURVEY: Gateway is seeking to collect data on access and equity in the district directly from students, staff, parents, guardians, and family members. Gateway always aims to include all students regardless of race, color, sex, gender identity, religion, national origin, limited English proficiency, sexual orientation, disability, or housing status. Survey can be accessed digitally here.

GATEWAY ED FOUNDATION OVER $100K: At its September meeting, the Gateway Education Foundation Board of Directors announced four new awards totaling $3,880, pushing the total amount of funding provided by GEF to over $100,000 since it began in 2012.

CRAFTERS NEEDED: Join the annual Holiday Bazaar at Littleville Elementary School on Saturday, November 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vendor registrations may be picked up at the Littleville Elementary School Office or by emailing afisk@grsd.org.

KIDS and AGGRESSION WORKSHOP: Author and teacher Scott Noyes will present a two hour workshop called "Kids and Aggression: Helping Children Resolve Conflict and Manage Anger" at Gateway Middle School on Thursday, October 3 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Parents & guardians who attend will learn ways to resolve conflict through mediation, triads, and supportive intervention.
